How much attention should the music take?

Do not judge softness only by volume. A bright piano note, exposed vocal texture, or repeated upper melody can remain prominent even when the track is mixed quietly.

Play the cue under the quietest voice in the edit. If every sentence makes you reach for the fader again, choose a track with fewer exposed notes and melodic changes. Soft instrumental music does not need to disappear, but it should not keep asking the listener to follow it.

Watch the scene once without looking at the audio meters. An accent that seems harmless beneath continuous speech may suddenly feel like punctuation under a reaction, title, or line of on-screen text.

Choosing a sparser section or a track with fewer foreground elements can preserve the mood better than pushing the entire mix further into the background.

Keep some movement in calm footage

A slow product shot, family scene, interview cutaway, or quiet landscape may still need a small sense of progression. A subtle pulse, changing chord, or occasional instrumental entrance can carry time without asking for another cut.

Hold one longer shot and listen through it. If the track stops developing well before the image is finished, the scene can feel stalled. If new details keep arriving every few seconds, attention begins to move from the picture back to the soundtrack.

Watch for small elements that suddenly feel loud

Sparse arrangements expose individual details. A single bell note, piano accent, cymbal swell, or melodic phrase may pass unnoticed during a montage and jump forward as soon as the edit reaches a pause or close-up.

Move the cue across that moment or try another section of the same track. The better choice may simply contain fewer foreground events rather than needing a lower overall level.
