Gentle music may also be referred to as easy listening (also known as mood music), lounge or ambient music. Easy listening tends to be solely instrumental and rarely has lyrics which makes it a great style of music to play during meditation.
Having young children and babies can be difficult at times and gentle music can be used as lullabies or even just to soothe them is common practice. Babies will learn to associate gentle music with a sense of feeling calm and secure. Gentle music is perfect for babies at bedtime. Lullabies such as “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” is a common song used to calm babies down. The use of an acoustic guitar or other string instruments is a great accompaniment to this song. You can even play more famous gentle music to babies to help them stay calm or rest. A great example is “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beetles.
Classical Music is a great genre of gentle style music. It is traditionally used for meditation in several places around the world. Generally, it is soothing and is known to help concentration. Examples of gentle classical music can be the works of Mozart, Beethoven and Blazer.
When meditating or relaxing it is great practice to listen to gentle music. There are several great playlists on YouTube specifically designed for meditation. They generally have no lyrics and feature sounds of the outdoors, such as birds signing and rain pouring alongside soft woodwind instrumentals and light percussion instruments. Nevertheless, even music styles with lyrics can be great for relaxation and meditation. For example, the music stylings of indie folk band Bon Iver in tracks such as ‘Holocene’ and ‘Flume’ are great types of music to mediate to due to their low tempo and soothing lyrics.
This type of music is also great for sleeping. The Piano, especially is excellent to fall to sleep to, Debussy has some excellent songs that are very gentle. ‘Claire de Lune’, is probably one of his more popular melodies.
